Phylogeny |
Evolutionary history of a species. A diagram illustrating the deduced evolutionary history of populations of related organisms. |
Phytosanitary certificate |
A certificate provided by government plant health personnel to verify that seed material is substantially free from pests and diseases. |
Plesiospecies |
A species defined by a cladistic concept that does not insist on monophyly. It recognizes species pairs one a monophyletic daughter species (apospecies) and the other a paraphyletic progenitor species (plesiospecies). |
Pollination |
The process in which pollen is transferred from an anther to a receptive stigma by pollinating agents such as wind insects birds bats or the opening of the flower itself. |
Polyacrylamide |
A chemical that forms the basis of polyacrylamide gels used for electrophoresis. |
Polymerase Chain Reaction |
(PCR) A common molecular technique used to generate numerous copies of specific DNA fragments in vitro. |
Polymorphism |
The appearance of different forms associated with various alleles of one gene or homologous of one chromosome. |
Polyphyletic |
A non-monophyletic group where the common ancestor is placed in another taxon said another way a group in which the members do not ultimately derive from one common ancestor where the descendants of one or more other groups are included. |

A group of individual plants or animals that share a geographic area or region and have common traits. |
