This page describes the principles and strategy for safety duplication of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture
Over 700,000 samples of plant genetic resources are in the in-trust collections of the Centres of the CGIAR. The germplasm and the related information represent important global public goods to be used for the well being of the present and future generations. On 16 October 2006, the CGIAR Centres signed agreements with the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture placing these in trust collections of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture within the purview of this treaty. These agreements cover the responsibilities of the Centres to manage, distribute and secure the in trust collections.

An important aspect of genebank management is to secure duplicates of germplasm for safety backup to mitigate the risk of loss of collections. Information on the principles and best practises for safety duplication are spread through the literature. The documents linked below, pulls together this information and assesses current practices for safety duplication of seeds and vegetative materials against technical and economic considerations to mitigate risk. Recommendations based on scientific evidence and principles are presented as best practices for safety duplication of crop germplasm.
Any safety duplication arrangement requires a clear signed legal agreement between the depositor and the recipient of the safety duplicate that sets out the responsibilities of the parties and terms and conditions under which the material is maintained. A draft standard depositors agreement that can be customized to meet the needs of safety backup of seeds or vegetative collections has also been drafted.
